Better Basics enriches the lives of students through literacy and enrichment programs.
Better Basics’ programs are designed to promote and increase literacy. These programs provide students with an opportunity to develop the crucial reading skills needed to be successful in school and in life. Thirty-nine percent of third grade students served by Better Basics read below grade level according to the 2012 Alabama Kids Count Data Book. Reaching children at an early age with the reading support needed is crucial to continued literacy development and long-term school success. According to the Children’s Defense Fund, “Children know by about the third grade whether they are part of the mainstream or of another, more marginal world. Those who are routinely disciplined or struggle with schoolwork mentally drop out at this point. They actually leave school in the ninth grade, the major exit ramp from the path to college. The ninth grade is also the school year when many youth commit their first criminal offenses” (Cradle to Prison Pipeline Report, 2008). To best ensure academic success and a reduction in the high school dropout rate, it is paramount that students are provided reading intervention prior to the eighth grade. Better Basics’ programs offer a wide-range of literacy support for the public schools in our community. Through intervention programs, struggling students receive the individualized attention needed to catch up with their classmates . Students, through Better Basics enrichment programs, are inspired to read daily, and are exposed to artistic and cultural experiences that broaden vocabulary and unlock potential.
